Take a ferry from Naoshima via Teshima Island to Takamatsu. Rural Teshima Island is the site of another outstanding modern art museum. In Takamatsu, enjoy the local specialty, sanuki udon, for dinner.
In the early morning, take a train from Matsuyama to Imabari, the start of the Shimanami Kaido Cycling Road. Rent bicycles and cycle across the 70 kilometer long cycling road before returning the bicycles in Onomichi. Stay overnight in Onomichi.
Spend the morning in the sleepy seaside town of Onomichi and do the Temple Walk that connects 25 temples in Onomichi. Head on to Hiroshima and spend the afternoon and night there.
Take the ferry and local train from Miyajima to Iwakuni and explore the city's unique Kintai-kyo Bridge. Carry on to Hagi on the Sea of Japan coast and overnight there.
On the way from Hagi to Matsue, visit Izumo Taisha, one of Japan's most important and oldest shrines. If time permits, check out Iwami Ginzan, a world heritage site, as well. Overnight in Matsue.
The above itinerary is somewhat fast-paced. Tourists preferring a slow pace of travel should consider spending more time at some of the destinations along the way.
