Narita Bento for Airplane 2024/8/2 11:11
The flight I have booked does not include meals. As it is a rather long flight (Tokyo to San Francisco) I will need to plan to pack something to eat on the flight besides snacks. I was thinking of grabbing a bento box at Tokyo Station before heading to Narita, but was wondering if there were shops at Narita that sold bento boxes just in case I am pressed on time in Tokyo Station. I know there are 7-11 and FamilyMart before check in so I guess I could get something there, but if I remember those kind of bento/ pre maid meals don't have the best packaging whereas I could have the ekiben in my backpack for a few hours without it really being an issue??? Also not sure about food safety issues with bento boxes? Any recommendations?

There are conbinis also after security gate in Narita. So you can buy shortly before departure. But an eki Ben gives you more choice. Maybe get an ekiben and then a few more onigiri or small snacks at Narita?

Tokyo to San Francisco with no meals?? What bargain basement airline is that? I hope it’s an incredible deal.

Gregalor ... it is a plane that is all lie flat seats ... not a bargain although you can get seats at really good rates through some websites ... they do serve food, but there is an option to not buy a meal. After getting Salmonella on a trip to Seville I pretty much avoid airplane food and just bring my own. Works well for trips between east coast and Europe, but Japan to SF is a little more involved.

Turns out it is a budget flight, no meals (option to purchase in flight meal in advance) no in flight entertainment, restrictions on luggage … but a lie flat seat is worth it. Can pack meals and watch Netflix on phone/ read a book … but I need to plan for the meals … Will probably eat at airport right before flight and bring a bento + snacks.

I've flown on Zipair SFO <-> NRT several times, and I agree 100% that their lie flat seats are worth the price of admission. I ordered meals on Zipair before, but the meals weren't that good, even the nice looking Katsu Sando for the NRT -> SFO leg. I'm flying again later this year, and I'm not buying any meals. They sell Yebisu beer on board, which is my favorite, but completely unavailable in the USA. I usually get a six pack to put into my checked luggage on the flight back.

I digress, though. At NRT airside, there is a sushi restaurant which sells a nigiri box, which is perfect for the flight -- it will keep for a couple of hours. It isn't Michelin * quality, but it is better than most sushi you can get in the states, so that is what I often will purchase. You can also get a hard boiled egg at 7-11 before you depart TYO and eat that before you land.

And, if OP is referring to ZIpair, the plane isn't all lie flat. There are 18 lie flat seats in each 787. The rest are economy.

Thanks Oenophile … yes it is zipair … I have never flown on it before, but I am pretty sure we booked lie flat … only reason I thought it was all lie flat is because the only other time I had lie flat was from New York-Paris-Nice on an airline called La Companie … highly recommend it was maybe about 100 seats on the plane in pairs of 2 (2 on left 2 on right)
