How can I become a guardian in Japan?

My family wants to welcome a Canadian high-school student who is coming to Japan on her own. She will need a guardian here in Japan and we want to help her but don't know where to start and how it is done. Also what are our responsibilities. I would be very grateful for any information. Thanks in advance.
