Night stay in Tateyama or Ogizawa? 2024/10/1 19:51
I’m planning to do the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route starting from Tokyo. I only have one night to stay at a hotel. Which is the best option: staying in Tateyama or Ogizawa, and which side should I begin from?

If I had a choice, I would stay at the Tateyama Hotel. Other hotels and mountain huts along the actual Alpine Route are also special because they are all in the middle of mountainous nature far from civilization.

There are no hotels at Ogizawa, but several in the nearby Omachi Onsen. I stayed there once and was not thrilled. There are also a few lodgings near Tateyama Station, but I don't find the area too appealing.

I visited Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route 3 times. I stayed the following hotels.

ANA Crowne Plaza Toyama. 10 min walk to Dentetsu Toyama station. 1+ hour train ride to Tateyama station. Cable car and bus to Murodo (at around 11:00).An ordinary hotel in the town. Around 20000 yen for 2 with no meal.

Daiwa Roynet Hotel Toyama Ekimae. 3 min walk to Dentetsu Toyama station. Middle range “business hotel”. Around 20000 yen for 2 with no meal.

Mikurigaike onsen. 15 min walk from Murodo bus station. Public Onsen bath (very crowded). 30000 yen for 2 with dinner and breakfast. Small inn type accommodation. No toilet in the room. For 13th Nov. the fare is 27700 yen for 2.

Hotel Tateyama. O min to Murodo bus station. Public onsen (may not be onsen) which is very clean and not so crowded. 110000 yen for 2 (there second best room with view of mountains). Very nice dinner and breakfast included. This was the top season so now the rate for this November it is cheaper. You may better book directly from their own site (more room remained, more options than the booking sites).

For 13th Nov. Their suite room is 77000 yen for 2.

Holiday Inn Resort Shinano-Omachi Kuroyon. Just in front of Hinatayama Kogen bus stop (half way between JR Shinano-Omachi station and Ougisawa bus terminal). Very nice public Onsen with out door bath (not crowded). Nice buffet dinner and breakfast. Very clean and spacious room (if you choose it). Free shuttle bus to Shiano-Omachi station (not so many). My wife’s favorite.

Yes, if I had a choice, I would also choose Hotel Tateyama. My second choice is Holiday Inn Resort Shinano-Omachi Kuroyon.

I stayed at the Midagahara Hotel and fell in love with it.
The air at Murodo was thin for me, so I was glad I didn't have to stay at Murodo.
I went through Ogizawa to Toyama.
I've never taken the opposite route, but when I went through the tunnel, Kurobe Dam appeared below, so it was powerful.
With this route, you go down 220 steps, so I think it's less of a burden on your body than going up.

I'm sorry.
I went there a long time ago, so my memory wasn't clear.
As for the stairs at the Kurobe Dam, if I went from the Tokyo area, I went up and then down.
But I remembered that the outdoor stairs were harder.
By the way, the stairs are shorter if you don't go to the Dam Observatory(ダム展望台).
