Traveling with JR from Tokyo to Mount Haguro?

I will buy a JR Pass because I want to travel through Japan.

I'm sadly afraid to make my first decision: How to get from Tokyo to Mount Haguro? (Google shows the address: 羽黒山, Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture 997-0211)

I don't know which train or bus to take. Especially since I want to travel by train/bus at night. I'm very afraid of getting lost. I checked various websites and maps, but I'm not sure because I'm not familiar with long distance transport in Japan.
(unfortunately I don't speak Japanese and I'm not very good at English)
