Omachi vs Hakuba

I'm heading to this area in the fall, so not skiing. We will have a rental car from Nagano and plan to stay for 3 nights/2 days in the area, heading to Kamikochi after. Rough plans are to try to do the Hakuba-One hike and part of the Alpine Route. Does it make a difference which we stay in, Hakuba or Omachi?
Which town is there more to do or more places that would be open in the autumn?
