Australian P2 license conversion to Japanese

Does anyone have experience converting an Australian P2 Driving license to a Japanese one? If you have converted please share your experience. I am wondering if the Japanese DMV accepts P2 driving licenses.

I believe you need to have a full drivers license for the conversion. You will not receive a probationary Japanese license.

Checking the page on the Japanese embassy in Australia, the AAA regarding issuing IDPs, and the conversion procedures the best I got to was "maybe".
Reading the AAA page about restrictions suggests they would issue an IDP.
For the conversion procedures, they do not explicitly talk about restricted or learners licenses, but they do talk about "novice" drivers and there are some extra steps in the process.
