Aomori City 2024/7/29 09:19
Hi,

Wondering if Aomori city on its own is worth a daytrip from Sendai? Any recommendations on what to do in the city ?

Had looked at a side trip to Hirosaki but seems it is more of cherry blossom or foliage spots (we will be going in September).

We are travelling by train hence, going to nature or remote places are difficult.

Have visited Morioka, Geibikei and Yamagata previously, but never see Aomori (other than passing from Shinkansen) hence reason for considering the city.

Hi
In my opinion nothing special in Aomori city itself
But maybe others have other experience
Maybe the Nebuta matsuri museum that has some nice floats is worth a visit i liked it and visited before the Nebuta matsuri
But I was twice at the Nenuta matsuri which is special and worth a visit

I love Nebuta Festival floats. They are so artistic and dynamic. The museum is where you can see them up close. After visiting the museum I vowed to return and see the real festival, which I finally did last year (after the cancellation and reduced participation due to the pandemic).

One item crossed off of my bucket list.

As a day trip from Sendai? I probably wouldn't do that when there are other competing locations, but I do often visit Aomori as it is a good place to break up travels between Sapporo/Hakodate and other places (Akita and Sendai usually).

Thanks NJT and kamahen for the information.

JCT - yes, we are planning to do a daytrip from Sendai. We have a free day on which we want to use our train pass. As mentioned, have been to Morioka, Geibikei Gorge and Yamadera, so we are slightly running out of daytrip option. We have considered Akita & Fukushima but without a car, it seems both cities have even less options than Aomori (from city area perspective)

You might look into doing Kakunodate as a day trip. Yes, it is a small spot to go to, but quite pretty, and some interesting history.

What about Hiraizumi?
I also agree with Kakunodate and/or Lake Tazawa
