Drone flying in Lake Kawaguchi area 2024/9/19 15:08
We will be staying in an onsen around the Lake Kawaguchi area. I was wondering if there's any restrictions on drone-flying and what kinds of permit do I need (if any). I was planning to buy the DJI mini which was advertised to be below certain weight that it doesn't require any permit. Is it true?

good morning

it is legally prohibited to use drone (regardless of types and weight) in 都市公園 urban parks such as 河口湖総合公園 Kawaguchiko Multi-purpose Park and 大石公園 Oishi Park.

full list of urban parks in 富士河口湖町 Fujikawaguchiko Town as follow
https://www.town.fujikawaguchiko.lg.jp/ka/info.php?if_id=790

for the use of drone outsides the urban parks in Fujikawaguchiko Town,
you will need to apply for a drone flight permit ドローン飛行許可申請
have a wonderful trip

Hi,

Regarding your second question. I travel to Japan in November and I'm also will take a drone with me. So I went trough the registration process. It is definitely more complex compared to other countries.

First of all, registration is required for all drones above 100g. Which affects in fact all drones with camera.

You can register the drone with the link below. Page is available in English, however if they request more information as they did it in my case, they will ask you in Japanese. But Google translator was my friend:

https://www.ossportal.dips.mlit.go.jp/portal/top/?lang=en

Important is that your drone supports Remote ID. Usually the newer drones do. Without Remote ID, process gets way more complex or is even not possible.

For registration you have to provide:

-Drone Model (Drop Down menu selection)
-Drone Serial number
-Passport details (You get a link for your mobile where you have to photograph your passport from the top and one additional photo with a 120 Degree angle.
-Selfie which you have to take during same procedure as the passport photos
-And an official document which confirms your full name, your residence (full address) and your date of birth

If your application gets accepted, you get an ID which you have to pin on your drone. Also you have to pay a fee (not very high, I forgot but I think it was about 15$)

I went trough that process and have now the ID. But as of now, I cannot confirm if I'm able to fly. I will see it in November....

Process wise it requires definitely more effort compared to EU and other countries where I also have a permit.
