Divorce for non Japanese couple in Japan 2024/7/4 13:11
I'm a non Japanese (Southeast Asian), and my soon to be ex husband is American. Both of us are PR holders in Japan. We registered our marriage at a ward office in Japan, and never registered our marriage in our home countries. We have no kids and we agreed to get a divorce, no division of property, etc very straightforward. Anyone knows on how to proceed with this, should we go to Family Court to settle the divorce?

Thanks

Best to contact a lawyer for this kind of situation.

Yes, consult with the family court regarding the procedures. I had a similar situation a few years back and with the assistance of a helpful court staff member and someone who assisted myself and my ex, we managed to satisfy the various legal hurdles. (In my case we had to comply with both Japan legal issues and those of our home country.) It was, in the end, pretty straight forward.
