Hello, As part of a week in the Japanese Alps we are wondering whether to stay for 2-3 nights in Hakuba ara or Omachi area. We love hiking, and were wondering where we would have more possibilities (without a car - so by public transport or tax) at this time of year. Is Hakuba recommended for day hikes during October? Would hiking up to the peaks be possible/recommended at this time of year? Thank you in advance for your time.

I am not a hiker. However hiking gup the peaksh depends on the specific situation when you are there. I went to Hakuba last year in early / mid October and the peaks were already covered in snow. I vaguely remember that some people went hiking there and got into a serious accident. Obviously hiking on lower elevations would have been totally possible. http://bicycletraveljapan.blogspot.com/2023/10/d3-to-hakuba.html?m=1

I posted a similar question but didn't get a response. Also going in October, though late October. Ended up going with Omachi. I think you can decide on hotel accommodations you find. Was planning on doing the Alpine Route and the Happo-One gondola over 2 full days, so not intense hiking but nevertheless some elevation. The closing/end of season dates can be found online.
