is it possible/practical to visit this area on way to Matsue via the train on same day? We have two full days in Matsue then on to Kyoto. Many thanks for your advice.

I recommend half a day at the very least for Hagi. And Iwami Ginzan also requires half a day. The trains between the cities tend to be slow and infrequent, and buses are required to access Iwami Ginzan. Furthermore, due to damaged tracks, trains are not running between Hagi and the Iwami Ginzan area until around mid August.
I am not sure where you are coming from and how much time you have for Hagi/Iwami. I recommend to allocate at least 1.5 days for Hagi and Iwami Ginzan, assuming you start day 1 in or near Hagi.

Thanks Uji,we are planning to have a full day in Hagi, then on to Matsue where we will have three nights and two full days. If the train line is repaired would it be best to go to Iwami Ginzan from Matsue and make a day of it?

In order to go to Iwami Ginzan, there is a need to take a bus from the Ohda-shi station or Nima Station on Sanin Line. http://www.visit-ohda.jp/files/20140127091127.pdfhttp://www.visit-ohda.jp/files/20140302085834.pdfOhta-shi Station and Nima Station are located on the way to Matsue from Hagi. You can select whether visit to either Iwami Ginzan or Matsue. If you're going to visit Iwami Ginzan after Matsue, then you can by using the highway bus of Hiroshima bound from there, then headed to Kyoto by bullet train. It departs from the World Heritage Centre at 16:29, arrive at Hiroshima Station at 18:58. About what Uji have mentioned, probably, I think I would means that the construction of between Nago '奈古' Station and Susa '須佐' Station. If you're going to use the interval before the restoration, it is necessary to switch to the shuttle bus. It takes time travel time than normal, but is estimated to be in time for the transfer to the direction of Matsue in Masuda Station.
