3 day Nakasendo self guided suggestions 2024/10/3 05:54
My friend and I have four days to spare after skiing and time in Tokyo. We are interested in walking a few days of the Nakasendo way, self guided at the end of February. Any suggestions as to most picturesque, ryokans to stay at along the way and luggage transfer companies?

By far the most picturesque section is in the Kiso Valley, but the trails can be difficult to pass when there is snow:

The main problem with this time of year is as Uji suggests - it's snowy and not really well set up for general hiking in the winter.

The ryokan I was going to suggest in Tsumago actually closes for winter if that gives you an idea....

Have you considered possibly hiking the Kumano Kodo instead? The likelihood of snow is much less there, although there is no guarantee it wouldnft rain. The scenery will be superb, and I believe there are services and lodging available year-round, although I really donft know much about it in winter. The Tanabe Tourism Bureau has a good website, if youfre interested:

Kumano Kodo would be much different from the Nakasendo, of course. And itfs farther from Tokyo and more time-consuming/expensive to get to.
