Round trip CTS airport via Furano Asahikawa

Hi, we are doing a round trip over 3 days starting tomorrow from the CTS airport and spending a day driving to our accommodation near the Asahidake Ropeway. We will spend 2 nights there hoping for hiking around the area on day 2. Then we drive back to the airport on day 3.

We were thinking of stopping off in Furano and Biei on the first day. Do people think that is a good idea, and any other ideas of interesting places to visit on that day? On the way back to CTS airport (day 3), we weren't too sure where to visit. Is Asahikawa worth a visit, or are there other places people could recommend we visit that day? We have the whole day available for sightseeing on the way to the airport.
