Okuhida Onsen Daytrip?

Hi, we will be spending 3 nights in Tokayama before heading to Tokyo. I've read that 3 days is more than enough time so we thought that maybe we can do a day trip to the onsens in Okuhida. I've read that it's about a 1 hour bus trip. Is this worth it for a day trip? Any suggestions on where to go? Should we aim for a private onsen (and pay a day fee) or are there great public ones?
Is there another option from Takayama for a onsen day trip?

I would say generally public onsen are better (because bigger, more variation) than private ones. But in Okuhida area to my knowledge they aren’t mixed gender so if you are a couple / group of different gender you need to separate. While in Private you get a bath for your entire group.
Public also means that you are naked with all other customers.

So if that’s something you want to do or not only you can decide.

I have been only to Hirayu no Mori which is a very large public bath with many different rotenburos right at the bus stop.

Thanks for the response. No problem with the naked aspect as I've don't the onsens at Kinosaki. Just hoping that the few tattoos that I have won't be a problem (altho so far they've not been a problem). So a day trip is fine? I'd prefer not to overnight there.

i would say it is defiantly worth it. you make a lot of onsen hopping in this area and even combine it with a short gondula trip to the mountain.

there is also a small nice village between Shinhotaka onsen and Hirayu Onsen, there a lot of small ryokans, where you can do hikaeri (daytripping). But even within Hirayu you can do that and not much need to move around.

anyhow, i think for a day trip from tokyo the others things are already more than enough.

It will be a day trip from Takayama before we go to Tokyo. We will go to Takayama from Kanazawa and thought an onsen day would be a nice break. Thank you

I'd say Okuhida is well worth it, but if you do want an easier onsen daytrip or you want a back-up, Gero Onsen is very easy to reach by train from Takayama.
