Hokuto crowded?

Hi, we need to get from Hakodate to Sapporo during the time of the snow festival next February.
I was planning to take the Hokuto from Hakodate station to Sapporo station, but it seems to be only reserved seats.
Is it likely I will be stranded and unable to get a ticket on a Saturday?
If that happens, what are our options?
