Japan driver license expired 2 years

I have been living in Australia for 6 years now and I was thinking of going back to Japan to renew my license so that I don't have to get an international driver's license when driving there. Do I have to start from scratch or is there an exception for returning citizens? I have an Australian driver's license and been driving here in Australia too.

From above link, you cannot apply for renewal BUT need to apply for new licence at Driver’s License Center. Looks like it's just simple checkup and lecture.

Whether if you can do it or not that depends on the center and your supporting documents ...
