Pricing on Japan travel navitime 2024/10/3 21:07
I’m checking the price for Maibara to Osaka station using Setouchi area Pass.

The app is showing :
- JR Tokaido Sanyo Main Line New Rapid
- Setouchi area pass
- JPY 1980
- This fare is wholly or partly not included in Setouchi area pass

How can I found out which part is included / not included ?

By studying the coverage map vs. a general network map.

Here is the coverage map:
https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361_setouchi.html

Here is a general map:
https://www.google.com/maps/@38.2026774,140.3009871,5.71z

You will see that the pass covers the journey between Kyoto and Osaka, but not between Kyoto and Maibara. The one way fare for the Kyoto-Maibara section is 1170 yen. 1980 yen is the fare from Maibara all the way to Osaka.

Thanks Uji. How can I buy the ticket for the part that is not covered by Setouchi part ? Also, Maibara to Osaka is only a portion of the actual trip (Takayama to Osaka).
Do I have to check every part of the trip one by one and buy the additional ticket separately ?
Is there a way where I can just buy the ticket in one go by inputting Takayama to Osaka with Setouchi pass ?

At ticket machines or offices, as explained here:
https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2016.html

Also, Maibara to Osaka is only a portion of the actual trip (Takayama to Osaka).

It depends on the route you are taking. Do you plan to transfer from the limited express to a local train at Gifu? Note that the shinkansen between Kyoto and Osaka is not covered by the Setouchi Pass.

Do I have to check every part of the trip one by one and buy the additional ticket separately ?

It depends on the details of your trip. In many cases it is possible to buy just a single ticket all the way from A to B. And in case you use shinkansen or limited express trains, you will need to buy supplement tickets for these rides additionally.

Is there a way where I can just buy the ticket in one go by inputting Takayama to Osaka with Setouchi pass ?

It is difficult to judge without knowing your travel details. I am still mainly wondering about the fact why you will be in Maibara at one point and how you will travel between Takayama and Maibara. And whether you will leave Maibara Station or just change trains there. These details may have an impact on how many tickets you need to buy.

Another issue to keep in mind is where you will be picking up your pass. That may require an additional stop-over. In case of the Setouchi Pass, you would have to get off at Kyoto and buy it there. I don't think it can be activated anywhere east of Kyoto.

Hi Uji, thanks for the reply. Ticket will be picked up in Osaka. Takayama to Osaka is just one of the trip that I will have. I’m just trying to figure out how to use navitime and how to figure out which part is covered / not covered and if it’s possible to buy the additional ticket in one go. It’s quite confusing.

The route is :
Takayama - Gifu (Hida) JPY 1860
Gifu - Maibara (JR Tokaido main line) no price
Maibara - Osaka (JR Tokaido Sanyo) JPY 5500

I can’t figure out the JPY 5500 either. When I input the trip separately (for the exact same trains as above) :
Gifu - Maibara (it shows JPY 860)
Maibara - Osaka (it shows JPY 1980)
The total is less than JPY 5500

Re: your itinerary and Setouchi Area Pass 2024/10/4 09:29
Maibara to Osaka is only a portion of the actual trip (Takayama to Osaka).

Unless you plan to visit Setouchi before Takayama,
you don't get your Setouchi Area Pass until you get to Ōsaka ,
so you highly likely pay fully the fare and surcharge for Takayama -> Ōsaka.

There is one Limited Express train
which runs from Takayama via Gifu, Maibara and Kyōto to Ōsaka every day.

Hida 36: Takayama {15:34} -> {19:50} Ōsaka.

Limited Express Hida trains basically connect Nagoya and Hida area.
Except when you can catch the above Hida 36,
the best route would be
Takayama --[Hida]-- Nagoya --[Shinkansen NOZOMI]-- Shin-Ōsaka
--[Special Rapid | Rapid | Local]-- Ōsaka.

"New Rapid" seems to be a tentative term by NAVITIME for 新快速 of JR-West.
Practically JR-West calls 新快速 as Special Rapid.

Thanks Omotenashi. I guess with Setouchi I have to pay extra for most of the trip (except for shin osaka to osaka part)

Takayama - Gifu (Hida) JPY 1860
Gifu - Maibara (JR Tokaido main line) no price
Maibara - Osaka (JR Tokaido Sanyo) JPY 5500

The above makes no meaning to me, at all!

The details also depend on where you intend to make stop-overs, if any.

Without stop-overs and without taking the shinkansen, but with taking the limited express between Takayama and Gifu, the one way ticket from Takayama to Osaka should be around 7500 yen.
