Kyushu beach recommendations 2024/10/1 06:26
Planning 10 days touring Kyushu before flying home from Fukuoka last week in October. Would like to spend 2-3 days at a beach ideally able to swim. Any recommendations?

The swimming season in the Kyushu Sea lasts until mid-August. After that, the ebeachesf will be closed, so there will be no more rest rooms with showers and no more lifeguards to help drowning people. The beach itself will of course not disappear, so you can go there and you will probably be able to get into the sea in your swimming costume, but it is not recommended due to the cold, high waves and toxic jellyfish. It is not impossible to have problems with the locals. There is a possibility that the locals may think someone is doing something dangerous and call the police.

If you want to wear a wetsuit and snorkel or dive, this may be possible all year round. In this case, it would be better to apply to a dive shop.

Okinawa: About 2 hours by air, 20000-25000 yen round trip. There are many beaches where you can swim.

Nokonoshima: about 1.5 hours by train and bus.

Seaside Momochi: 20 min by subway.

Kujuukushima islands in Sasebo: 4 hours by train and ferry.

In general, water is more clear in remote islands. So Okinawa is the best, then Kujuukushima, Nokonoshima.

As said, if you want to jump in the water like you are suggesting, Okinawa (or other islands like Amami, or Takahama Beach on Goto Is.) would be more up your alley.
Kyushu certainly has some nice beaches, though you will be out of season. Of course, your question may not be totally realistic since you are assuming you can easily just go anywhere. It is a large island and getting from one place to another can take a good chunk of time.
Some of the better places though are Isagahama Beach in Miyazaki, Iso Beach in Kagoshima, Tsuyazaki or Fukuma in Fukuoka, etc. Nokonoshima or Momochihama...yeah, eh, no thanks. Too much pollution in Hakata Bay for me. If you want to concentrate on one area, I'd suggest the Miyazaki coast.

If you do not swim, how about Nichinan Kaigan in Miyazaki.? This coast is facing the Pacific. You have not indicated the mode of transport.

You could drive along the coast or take a train from Miyazaki Station and goes all the way to Nango Station or further field, visiting beaches or Island of Aoshima which is connected by a causeway and walk around the island. There are many scenic spots. You could take a bus as well from Miyazaki City and go to Obi, known as little Kyoto.

Beaches in islands like Iki and Goto Fukue are beautiful. Tsunoshima is one day drive from Fukuoka, which is also famous for clear water and sand beach.

Thanks for all the responses - apart from Okinawa - Amami and Gotu are interesting suggestions.

Will definitely get a hire car from Fukuoka for touring around from Kyushu so should be able to see a lot.
