Kirishima hiking, closures 2024/8/31 22:27
Hi,
Read about current closures of some of the hiking trails around Kirishima area. Is it still worth taking the effort of hiking around the area given the current closures or should I better wait until the trails are fully open?

Planning for the visit this autumn/early winter.

I have been waiting for the reopening of trails for years, but I am starting to lose hopes, because the trails remain closed even years after the volcanic alert was lowered to 1.

In any case, there are still some very rewarding hikes in the area, such as Takachiho-no-mine, Karakunidake and Lake Onami. But I recommend renting a car, because public transportation is virtual non-existing.

I was thinking if I should combine the visit to Takachiho as well, or possibly Beppu. But I am not sure if it is too far to drive from Kirishima area, depending on where I rent my car of course.

I think it takes approx three hours or more to Takachiho and more than two hours to Beppu from Takachiho, of course depending which routes you will take makes difference in how long it will take.
I was Ebino in late October two years ago for trekking, could have been better to go later. Though some part was closed but it was a lovely hike.
This year in early November, I will do the same. This time I am going to stay in onsen nearby.
There are lot of onsen, hot spring, in the area .

I have been taken to Ikoma Highland and Ebino Highland by car before.
In Ikoma Highland, the best time to see cosmos is from the beginning to the middle of October.
