For those not already aware of this, there's a really awesome facebook group for "alumni of Chofu High School, Chofu Middle/Jr. High School, and Chofu Elementary School" but really it's for anyone who lived on or near Kanto Mura Family Housing Annex. Reconnect with old friends or meet new ones!
https://www.facebook.com/groups/2362486999/about/

Here are a few other excellent groups dedicated to some of the other gone-but-not-forgotten bases (except for Yokota AB which is still going strong):

Tachikawa Air Base Japan 1945-1977, This group is for anyone that was stationed at "Tachi" in the U.S. Military, Civilian Workers, Japanese employees and Military Dependents.

These are just a few, but I'm sure there are plenty more groups for those of us who experienced military life in one of the best places on earth!

This is to Bill Sexton, previous guest. We were at Fuchu Air Station 1969-1972, and I attended Chofu HS and graduated 12th grade in 1971. I also had Dr. Anastasis for Creative Writing for two years. She would buy her class diaries off base to use as journals and sent Christmas cards designed by her architect husband with her poems. She even mailed a wedding gift to me after Dad was reassigned back to the States! I also saw Led Zeppelin in concert in Japan!

Hey all,
I went to Chofu Elem through 3rd grade and I think we lived in the 440s B. I had Miss Humphill and Miss Keller I believe. I also have a younger sister and brother. So many memories, many of which youfve already shared but didnft see these (just donft ask me what happened last week):

-Roller skates that went over your shoes with keys
-Elvis movies and Westerns
-flipping around the bars on the playground
-catching cicadas
-older kids made go-carts out of bicycle tires (I wanted one!)
-and lots of girl drama in the court
-watching The Rolling Stones on tv
-the Apollo
-Lttle Willy on the jukebox at the cafeteria
-tiger man, Tom & jerry and the cool Japanese show that if kids sang a song they could pick a really nice toy out

My neighbors were the Wilsons, Pam, Barbara & the Craigs that I recall. Werenft we blessed to have had the good fortune to grow up this way?!

Re: Anyone live in/near Kanto Mura 1970-73? 2023/12/19 06:55
We lived on Kanto Mura from 70-73. Our court was near the back gate. I have three brothers, Butch, Rick and Mark Danley. Our Dad was in the AF Band and someone mentioned parades, Dad did plenty of those! I'm friends with Kathi Roldan (brothers Rick and Peter) and Lynda Morgan (brother Otha) and Donna Baldwin on Facebook. I saw the name Doris Sawicki on one of the posts, and I'm thinking of a pretty little girl with long, straight, dark hair with bangs, who sold beaded rings at school for ten cents apiece that she kept on a long chain. My 4th grade teacher was Miss Chesterman, 6th grade was fun and wacky Miss Matlock, and I can't remember my 5th grade teachers name, but she was thin and had blonde hair. She read Homer's Iliad, A Wrinkle in Time, and Island of the Blue Dolphins to the class. We never lacked for things to do and never missed not having television. Swimming, skating, movies, library, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts events, festivals, libraries, school field trips, camping at Tama, the BX, the "Minko Store", shopping in the little village off-base, hobby shop, bingo and dining at the "Hacienda" at the NCO club on Wednesday nights at Fuchu AS, it was a kids paradise!

Yes. 1967-70 I lived across the fire station. I had so many good memories. Teen club and dances I played for. Remember the g Soul Searchersh . Best R&B band I enjoyed playing drums with them. Great musicians.

Hi fellow Vikings! I lived on KantoMura and attended Chofu from 67 to 71. Had MANY wonderful experiences jumping on trains to travel around the country including EXPO 70 a couple of times. I volunteered at Tachikawa Hospital as a donut dolly , serving the wounded soldiers from Vietnam. So many great memories....sad that it's no longer there! My fav teacher was Miss Riordan the Spanish teacher. I ended up being a Spanish teacher until I retired in Washington state. I now live in Phoenix, AZ

Pamela,

I lived there the same time you did. I also stayed with a Japanese family through the Japanese girl scout exchange program. It was so fun. We lived at 607D.

Several have mentioned pictures from the elementary and middle schools. Can you please share the locations I might find the pics. I am on Chofu Rules but it seems to mainly have High School things.

I lived there from 1968-1972 with my sisters Tammy, Tenley and Tiffany. Dad worked at 5th AF headquarters. I remember the hole in the fence, the candy, mama San c.. Tammy spent a lot of time developing film. I did jewelry making, roller skating, Japanese doll making. Dad took three of us to climb Mt Fuji. Does anyone remember Ms. Reed? I think she was 3rd or 4th grade teacher. She is the reason I went into education. I loved her! Some names I remember are Phoebe Linniker, she had big dogs, and Janice Link. Good times.

We were neighbors. I do not recall the building numbers, but you may have described the building adjacent to ours. Willie Harris lived in that building. Rodney Holman lived in mine. Xavier lived in the third building. There was a skinny blonde girl but I don't remember her name.

The minko store was either directly behind Willie or the next courtyard. Miss Wuddell, Miss Enmeier 2nd and 3rd grade.

1969 thru 1974..ish Apt 609-D catty corner to the firestation. Kindergarten thru 2nd/3rd grade at the elementary school. Hadn't thought about the hole in the fence until I saw this thread. After school event daily. Menko cards still got a bag full. Chofu HS football games with some of the big kids was fun. Walked to the commissary mom two sisters, in a typhoon. Broke my hand on Dr Davis's kids head. Haven't thought about this in years...

We lived on Kanto Mura! I was there from 3rd -5th grade. I don't know how I found this chat room. I'm looking for Helen Deanda and Rebecca Howell. Would love to reconnect. I remember the hole in the fence very well!
