I intend to buy a 8-day Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Kippu ticket (Hida version).
When using this ticket, is it a must to start the ticket from Nagoya and finish at Nagoya within 8 days? Or can I start from another station along the allowed route such as Gero and return to Gero within 8 days?
Will I be able to buy this ticket from Gero or Gifu JR stations?

The ticket can be purchased for use from Shizuoka, Hamamatsu and Gifu (and also various stations in the Osaka/Kyoto region). The Nagoya ticket can be used from any JR station within Nagoya City. But a ticket for use from Gujo is not available.
The ticket allows you to get off at Gero. So, you could theoretically end your trip there and throw the ticket into the garbage. I am not sure whether it would still pay off, though.

Gifu: yes. Gero: no.

Thankyou so much for your reply.
My itininery this time is for 10 days flying in Nagoya and planning to stop at Gero, Takayamma, Toyama, then the Alpine route, then Nagano and back to Nagoya. The 5 day Nagoya Alpine pass is far from enough, hence I was thinking an 8 day pass may be possible. I understand I will have to pay separately for trips outside of the 8 days as well as any side trip such as to Nagano on top of the kippu ticket cost. The decision is when to start using the 8 day kippu ticket to minimise the extra train costs on top of the kippu.
My remaining questions after reading your reponse is : when buying the 8-day ticket, does the clock start to click from that day with no choice to 'activate' it until another date? That is to say, if I buy an 8-day ticket from Nagoya on Sep15, is there a choice to 'activate' it on Sep17 after I have travelled to Gero (I pay for my own train from Nagoya to Gero). This is because if I start the 8day pass from Sep15, it will expire on Sep22 when I am still in Nagano. Nagano to Nagoya costs JPY6930 where as Nagoya to Gero is only JPY4170.

Yes, you can start using the 8-day ticket from Gero on Sep 17th. You donft use Nagoya to Gero section, but there is no problem.
Nagano to Nagoya costs JPY6930 where as Nagoya to Gero is only JPY4170.
Note that the 8-day ticket does not cover Nagano to Matsumoto.
