Fukui and Tokyo are connected by direct trains along the Hokuriku Shinkansen. The one way trip costs around 16,000 yen and takes just under three hours by the fastest Kagayaki trains, while slower Hakutaka trains require around 3.5 hours. Kagayaki trains run only in the mornings, late afternoons and evenings and are fully reserved, while Hakutaka trains also carry non-reserved seats. Both are fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass and Hokuriku Arch Pass.
JAL and ANA operate several flights per day between Tokyo's Haneda Airport and Komatsu Airport in nearby Ishikawa Prefecture. Flight duration is about one hour. The regular one way fare is around 25,000 yen, however discounts tickets are usually available for between 12,000 to 17,000 yen. Komatsu Airport is a one hour, 1400 yen bus ride from Fukui Station.
Daytime and overnight highway buses are operated between Tokyo (Tokyo Station and Shinjuku) and Fukui Station. The one way trip takes about 8 hours and fares range from around 5,000 to 10,000 yen.

Many of Fukui's attractions lie outside of the city center and can be accessed relatively conveniently by train or bus from Fukui Station, the region's major transportation hub. Traveling directly between the various attractions, however, is more difficult, and it may be easiest to travel via Fukui Station. Consequently, a rental car can be more convenient for exploring multiple sights in the region. Several rental car outlets can be found around Fukui Station.
Four railway companies operate in and around Fukui. Japan Railways (JR) operates the Hokuriku Shinkansen and the rural Kuzuryu Line, which provides access to the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins. Hapi Line Fukui operates local trains parallel to the shinkansen line, while Echizen Railway can be convenient for accessing the Dinosaur Museum and Tojinbo. Fukui Railway is less relevant to tourists. The local bus network is operated by Keifuku Bus and is convenient for accessing Eiheiji.
The closest major airport to Fukui is Komatsu Airport, located halfway to Kanazawa. Buses connect the airport with Fukui Station in about one hour and for 1400 yen one way.
