Beaches on the Izu Peninsula

The Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture offers many beaches along its long coastline. The water is generally clearer than at beaches closer to Tokyo, and it is possible to snorkel and spot small fish and corals at some of the beaches.

The official swimming season at Izu beaches is typically from around mid July to late August, but water and weather temperatures allow for beach activities earlier and later than that. Many of the popular beaches are patrolled by lifeguards and have rental shops, food stalls and public toilets nearby. Compared to the beaches closer to Tokyo, there are fewer rules at the beaches in Izu, but most still prohibit barbecues and camping.

East Izu

The peninusla's eastern coast is more populated and urban and includes the cities of Atami and Ito. Lifeguards patrol the beaches during the summer beach season, and shops and restaurants can be found near the beaches. Train and bus frequencies are comparatively frequent, and most places are within walking distance from a train station or bus stop.

Atami Sun Beach

Ten minute walk from Atami Station

Atami Sun Beach is an approximately 400 meter long beach close to Atami Station with rental shops along the road and a marina nearby. Restaurants and convenience stores can be found a short walk away. The beach can get very crowded during the summer with as many people on the shore and in the water.
Nagahama Beach

Ten minute walk from Izutaga Station or 20 minutes by bus from Atami Station

Nagahama is a 400 meter long beach not far from Atami. Popular for swimming and sunbathing, it is also considerably less crowded compared to Atami Sun Beach. Temporary beach huts, rental shops and food stalls open for business during the summer swimming season. Public toilets are open during daytime, and free outdoor showers can be found near them.
Ito Orange Beach

Five minute walk from Ito Station

Approximately 600 meters long, Ito Orange Beach is a relatively popular beach with temporary beach huts and rental shops that open for business during the swimming season. There are also plenty of restaurants and convenience stores nearby.

Around Shimoda

Shimoda is a town near the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula. Its train station, Izukyu-Shimoda, is the terminal stop of the Izukyu Railway Line and also a main hub for buses going further down into the peninsula where many nice beaches can be found. One of the Izu Peninsula's most famous beach, Shirahama Beach is only a short bus ride away from the train station.

Shirahama Beach•

Ten minutes by bus from Shimoda Station

Shirahama Beach is an 800 meter long beach and one of the Izu Peninsula's most famous and popular attractions. Convenience stores and shops along the main road offer food, drinks and rental equipment. Public toilets can be found along the main road as well.
Sotoura Beach

Seven minutes by bus from Shimoda Station, followed by a five minute walk to the beach

Sotoura Beach is a 450 meter long swimming and sunbathing beach about 2.5 kilometers away from Shirahama Beach and considerably less crowded. Temporary beach huts and rental shops open for business during the summer swimming season.
Kujuppama Beach

20 minutes by bus from Shimoda Station, followed by a short walk along a relatively steep slope to the beach

Kujuppama Beach is a small and slightly hidden beach along the western Tsumekizaki Coast. Despite its size and location, the beach is fairly popular with many visitors swimming and sunbathing. Facilities at the beach include a rental shop, food stand and toilets. Kujuppama Beach is best accessed by car, as buses to the Tsumekizaki Coast are very infrequent.
Tatadohama Beach

About seven minutes by bus from Shimoda Station, followed by a five minute walk to the beach

The approximately 400 meter long Tatadohama Beach is a popular beach for surfing, swimming and sunbathing. Swimming and surfing should be carried out in their designated zones in the water. Rental shops and beach huts offer shelter, food, drinks and rental equipment during the day. Public toilets are available on site.
Iritahama Beach

About ten minutes by bus from Shimoda Station, followed by a five minute walk to the beach

Iritahama Beach is about a 400 meter long beach located close to Tatadohama Beach. Surfing, swimming and sunbathing are also popular activities at Iritahama Beach, like at Tadatohama. Food stands, rental shops and toilets open for business during the summer swimming season near the beach.
Kisami Ohama Beach

Ten minutes by bus from Shimoda Station, followed by a 15 minute walk

Kisami Ohama Beach is about a 350 meter long beach that is popular for surfing, swimming and sunbathing. Designated zones are set aside for swimming and surfing, and visitors should take note before entering the water. Rental shops and beach huts open during the summer swimming season and offer paid showers and toilets, food and drinks, as well as rental equipment.
Yumigahama Beach

25 minutes by bus from Shimoda Station

Yumigahama Beach is an approximately one kilometer long beach near the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, popular for swimming and sunbathing. Temporary rental shops and beach huts open for business during the summer swimming season, offering beachgoers food and drinks, shade, rental equipment and showers. Public toilets are also available nearby.

South Izu

Due to their remote location, most of the beaches in the south of the Izu Peninsula tend to be less crowded compared to those around Atami and Shimoda. Bus service is relatively infrequent to the beaches, and travel by car is a much more convenient way to get around. Lifeguards patrol the beaches during the summer season, and parking is charged at a flat rate of typically 1000 to 2000 yen a day.

Hirizo Beach

Two minute ferry ride from Nakagi Port (2000 yen for a round trip)

Hirizo Beach is right by the southern tip of the peninsula and can only be reached by a two minute boat ride. The waters surrounding the small, rocky beach are perfect for snorkeling and swimming. The beach gets very crowded during the summer holidays. There are only porta toilets at the beach, while other facilities like rental shops, scant food and drink stores can be found near the boat terminal.
Yagawa Beach and Mera Athletics Water Park

Three minute ferry ride from Mera Port (2000 yen for a round trip)

Yagawa Beach is a less crowded version of Hirizo Beach and offers snorkeling and swimming in very calm waters. The beach can be reached in a three-minute boat ride from Mera Port where the Mera Athletics Water Park is located. There is a single porta-toilet on the beach, and showers can be found near the water park. Note that there are no rental shops nor food and drink stores nearby.
Kumomi Beach

20 minute by bus from Matsuzaki

Kumomi Beach is a 300 meter long, sandy beach along the southwestern coast of the Izu Peninsula. The beach is located in an inlet, and the waters are clean and calm, making the beach suitable for children to swim in. There are limited toilet and shower facilities, but no rental shops nor beach huts. There are numerous minshuku near Kumomi Beach as well as a hot spring area.

West Izu

The western coast of the Izu Peninsula is beautiful and more remote than the eastern coast. Public transportation tends to be infrequent, and driving is more convenient to get around, although some of the smaller roads are narrow and parking lots can get full in summer. Some of the beaches towards the northwestern end offer views of Mount Fuji when visibility is good.

Noribama Beach

Immediately south of Dogashima

Noribama Beach is located right beside the popular attraction Dogashima in western Izu. The 150 meter long, sandy beach is bordered by Dogashima's dramatic stone formations, offering very scenic views. Beach huts and rental shops line the beach, and there are ample public facilities like toilets nearby.
Futo Beach

Five minute bus ride north of Dogashima, followed by a ten minute walk

Futo Beach is about 2.5 kilometers north of Dogashima. The 200 meter long stone beach lies in a protected cove which makes it suitable for children to swim. Visitors at the beach can see magmatic dikes that line part of the Futo Coast. Public facilities like toilets and showers are available, with a couple of beach huts.
Tagose Beach

Five minute bus ride north of Dogashima to Tago, followed by a 20 minute walk

Tagose Beach is tucked away at the end of the small bay where the town of Tago is located. The small, 100 meter long, stony beach offers clear waters and is suitable for both swimming and snorkeling. Good swimmers can also swim to an even smaller beach across from Tagose for more space. There are a couple of beach huts and limited toilets and showers.
Koganezaki Beach

20 minutes by bus north of Dogashima or 75 minutes by bus from Shuzenji Station, followed by a 10 minute walk

Koganezaki Beach is a 100 meter long, stony beach. The waters surrounding the beach are very clear and suitable for snorkeling and swimming. There is a camping ground near the beach as well as a smaller beach mainly used by the diving school there. Public facilities like toilets and showers are available, but there are no beach huts nor rental shops. Not far from the beach is Koganezaki Park where visitors can see various rock formations and Mount Fuji from the observatory when the weather is clear.
Crystal Beach

20 minutes by bus north of Dogashima

Crystal Beach is a 500 meter long, sandy beach in western Izu. The long and relatively shallow beach with calm waters makes it suitable for children to play in the water and go swimming. The beach is also home to Izu's largest beach camping ground, the Ugusu Campsite, which offers camping right by the beach. As such, there are ample of toilets, changing and shower facilities, as well as a limited number of foot and drink stores nearby.
Mihama Beach

In Heda Town

The 700 meter long Mihama Beach is a popular beach for families in the summer. Located in a protected cove, the waters are calm and suitable for children to swim and play. Numerous beach huts and rental shops line the beach, and there are toilets and outdoor showers. Mount Fuji can also be seen looming in the distance when the weather is clear.
Ose Beach

40 to 60 minutes by car from either Numazu or Shuzenji Station

Ose Beach is a popular, 360 meter long beach in western Izu. Beach huts, rental and dive shops line the beach and offer plenty of choices for activities. The waters are relatively clear, allowing for snorkeling opportunities as well as swimming. Beach dives are also popular from Ose, and in the summer about a third of the beach is separate to allow divers to enter. Mount Fuji can be seen across the water when the weather is clear.
Rarara Sun Beach

45 minutes by bus from Numazu Station

The 230 meter long, man-made Rarara Sun Beach can be found near the northern base of the Izu Peninsula. There is a rock pool area for kids, and the waters are also calm and suitable for swimming thanks to the breakwaters near the beach. Public toilets and outdoor showers are available, and there are beach huts by the beach as well. Mount Fuji can be seen across the water when visibility is good.
